Waterhen Bloa

No comments yet

This is my tying of the Waterhen Bloa. This is one of the most famous Spider patterns. North Country Spider - Yorkshire Spider - Soft Hackle wet.

Recipe:
Hook - Partridge barbless dry fly hook size 14. You can vary the hook gauge for different parts of the water column
Thread - Primrose yellow - here I use Kimono silk color number 301
Body - sparsely dubbed with water rat or European water vole. This material is no longer sold. I substituted Pine Squirrel raked off a skin to include both underfur and guard hairs.
Hackle - undercovert feather from a waterhen wing. Waterhen is available but difficult to get. A smoky gray is the color so a hen feather in that color is a sub. If you have drake mallard wings I like the overcovert as a sub.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
