You can use any feather that has a shape you like for flatwings. Saddle feathers are usually the best. You want fairly long, soft feathers of a reasonably uniform width. Many dry fly saddles contain lots of feathers useful for this purpose.

Glad to see this how to. I'm going to try it as a lampre eel in the Great Lakes. Flatwing is hard to find and it seems there are only so many feather types on a chicken and some can be labeled and sold for different purposes. You can use any long and narrow cock saddle feather dry fly ish as it were.
